Religion and faith are intregal parts of the Trentini culture. The land is rich in religious history, and its people are guided by their deep-seated beliefs and Catholic devotion. This profound faith is preserved through the multitude of monumental and religious works of art, as well as the large number of sanctuaries and hermitages spread throughout the region. The historical significance of the area was secured in 1545, when the city of Trento was selected to host the famous Council of Trent. The Council was assembled by Pope Paolo III in order to reform the Catholic Church following the protestant reformation in order to stem the tide of Lutheranism from spreading further south through Europe. Since that time, the Trentino has been recognized as a bastion of the Catholic religion.

As with other ancient areas of the world, the Trentino was initially pagan in belief. The Christianization of the area occurred around 400 A.D., due in large part to the devotion of San Vigilio, the third bishop of Trento. Through his work and ultimate sacrifice, Christianity flourished, stamping out paganism.

The links and information in this section address the history of Christianity in Trentino and outlines the important religious figures. Additionally, small overviews of the significant area churches, which dot the landscape throughout the region, has been provided.
