BACKGROUND

Unlike today, turn of the century immigration was filled with adventure, hardship and
perserverance. It was conducted in an age of little communication and limited knowledge of other
cultures. Those brave people who ventured so far from home were certainly adventureous, if not heroic in their
endeavors. Their spirit and experiences have shaped the American experience and its ecletic culture.
Like other cultures, Trentini immigration was aided by family and friends,
through a network known as the “chain-system.” Under this system, immigrants coming from the same town or area migrated to the same destination.
Essentially, the first immigrant to arrive invited a relative or friend to join him, and in turn that relative or friend called others, and so forth.
In this manner entire communities of fellow townsmen were formed, aiding each other with the exchange news, money, marriage arrangements,
and the relay of messages and packages from their return trips. The benefit of this system can be seen in the letters home, in which newly arriving
immigrants identified the importance of their fellow relatives and friends
in finding jobs and assisting in everyday needs.

parente o un amico ad unirlo ed a sua volta quel parente o amico ha denominato altri, e così via. In
questo modo, le intere Comunità dei townsmen del collega sono state formate, i membri di cui hanno
scambiato le notizie, aiutato, i soldi prestati, le unioni organizzate, i messaggi trasmessi ed i
pacchetti sui loro viaggi, riportati pettegoli ed a volte quarrelled. Come scritto nelle lettere, i
parenti e gli amici erano punti importanti di riferimento per recentemente arrivato, sia nell'individuazione
dei lavori che per i bisogni giornalieri.
