Background The motivation for this section of research was generated by the book Partire. E Poi, Speranze e
storie dei nostri emigranti (To leave. And Then. The hopes and history of our emigrants).
The book was written by Class V a e V b, during the 1997 to 1998 scholastic year in Baselga di
Pine. It contains personal accounts from the descendants of Pinetani immigrants, along with
statistics and historical information related to their travel, experiences and lives in a new land.
This section of the site relies on information from the book, as well as other
research, to describe and document the lives of the Pinetani immigrants in the United
States and specifically those of
Novinger, Missouri. Based on research, it appears that Novinger was a central point of immigration and represented a
common landing point many Pinetani, as well as the Mattivi/Anesi family.
In order to avoid confusion in this section, it is important to distinguish between the labels Trentini and Pinetani, as both have been used.
Trentini is a designation applied to those individuals residing in the Province of Trento, and
Pinetani refers to the residents of Altopiano di Pine (high plain of pines). Altopiano is part of the Trentini province, making our ancestors
both Trentini and Pinetani. For the purpose of understanding, it is helpful to think of these labels as county and city designations. For instance, if one
lived in New York City, Sufflock County, New York; you could be referred to as a Sufflock Countian,
as well as a New York Citian. Therefore, the referral and documentation of Pinetani immigration provides a narrower and more precise accounting of our
ancestoral history and can only be further narrowed through individual family research.
